The Dragonflight Codex, a companion lore book for the upcoming eponymous expansion, has just been announced by World of Warcraft. However, the listing for the new book appeared to contain a ground-breaking revelation: that a beloved World of Warcraft character was all along a dragon.

World of Warcraft: The Dragonflight Codex release date

World of Warcraft: The Dragonflight Codex, billed as “the ultimate WoW fan’s guide to everything dragons,” is set to be released on July 11, 2023. The 192-page book promises over 100 new illustrations and will go into detail about the abilities and history of the Dragon Isles’ dragons, dracthyr, and other denizens. The book will be written from the perspective of Khadgar, one of the most recognizable archmagi in World of Warcraft.

However, according to the Amazon listing, Khadgar was a member of the Bronze Dragonflight. As a character who first appeared in Warcraft 1, this seemingly new fact was shocking—at least for a few minutes, until World of Warcraft narrative lead Steve Danuser appeared to clear things up. Danuser confirmed that the listing had incorrectly identified Khadgar as a Bronze Dragonflight member, and that the well-known archmage was not a dragon.

Khadgar’s connection to the Bronze Dragonflight has long been rumored. He used Call of the Timewalkers in Warlords of Draenor, a reference to the group of mortals who work with the Bronze Dragonflight in World of Warcraft. Many people are wondering if The Dragonflight Codex will expand on this previous speculation and confirm or deny Khadgar’s connection to the Bronze Dragonflight in other ways.

The new World of Warcraft lore book has piqued the interest of players, but they are wary. Due to their shallow content and reliance on problematic stereotypes, both The Grimoire of the Shadowlands and Exploring Azeroth: Kalimdor received lukewarm reviews. If The Dragonflight Codex is to provide a satisfying World of Warcraft lore experience, it must contribute to the worldbuilding of Azeroth while remaining respectful of its audience. Exploring Azeroth: Northrend, the third installment in the World of Warcraft atlas series, will be released in November as well. If this new World of Warcraft book can satisfy players in a way that the previous entry did not, they may have more hope for The Dragonflight Codex.

Surprisingly, the World of Warcraft: The Dragonflight Codex listing mentioned another new book: A is for Azeroth: The ABC’s of World of Warcraft. Christie Golden, author of World of Warcraft, will write this officially licensed 32-page children’s book, which will be released on July 25, 2023.
